I remember hearing an evangelist talk about being born lame, and spending the first seven years of his life in leg braces. Later in life, long after his legs had regained normal strength, he was questioning God as to the purpose of this early disability. I recall hearing him say "God revealed to me that I would be working with the spiritually crippled all my life, and I needed to know what it felt like to be lame!"
This passage in I Samuel 22 recounts an all-time low in David's life. He lies to Ahimelech the priest, eats bread reserved for the priesthood, pretends to be insane in order to protect himself from the Philistine King Achish, and flees for his life, hiding in caves. In the midst of this, one beautiful example of the providence of God stands out. During this difficult time, all of the distressed, discontented debtors are drawn to David, and they become a faithful band of followers who go on to win incredible victories.
I Cor. 1 states "But God has chosen the foolish things of the world to put to shame the wise... and the weak things of the world to put to shame the things that are mighty... and the things which are despised God has chosen&that no flesh should glory in His presence."
In II Cor. 12:0, Paul states "And He (God) said to me, 'My grace is sufficient for you, for My strength is made perfect in weakness."
Are you weak today? Are fear and doubt beginning to crowd faith out of your life? Be grateful. For your very weakness opens the door for God to do great and mighty things in and through your life.
